VoIP over Gen 5 Satellite

VoIP over Satellite
There has been a lot of interest in a workable VoIP solution and so far, none of the solutions out there have worked well all of the time, though some work better than others.

If you would like to help determine what works well, here are some questions that can be answered about using VoIP over Satellite:
    1. Which services have you used? Skype, Google Voice/Hangouts, Ethernet VoIP phone, Other?
    2. Did you use a soft phone or an IP phone or other?
    3. What were your results on quality of calls? Specify for each service you tried.
    4. What were your speed test results for both upload and download? Specify for each quality if you had different results at different times and/or with different services.
    5. What kind of jitter (up, down, average and max) did you see on the various tests you did?
    6. What beam were you on for each test?
Please add your results to the thread. Perhaps if we all contribute and discuss the various results, we can find the best approach to use.

Of course, the HughesNet VoIP service is supposed to be available through the VAR channel very soon now, but not everyone wants to pay either $29.99 or $39.99 (no contract) a month in addition to their monthly Internet service charge. So, it would be good to have a low cost or free alternative.

Here are a few speed tests that focus on the things that are important for VoIP:
https://www.backblaze.com/speedtest/ - Shows jitter over the course of the test.
http://voiptest.8x8.com - Results and engine seem to be the same as http://www.whichvoip.com and it allows selection of the slow speed 729 codec.

Please see the following document which has some additional Notes on VoIP over Gen 5 Satellite:
